Youth concussion and brain injury continues to be in the news both in Iowa and Nationally. There is a rising trend to take this as a serious matter with our youth. We have found that concussions are best managed by a Multi-Disciplinary team to optimize recovery. It is imperative that those in a youth’s life know where they belong in array of supports and those teams communicate with each other.

As a member of the “Family Team,” your role is significant in facilitating communication between the multidisciplinary teams in addition to working with the youth to understand the importance of communicating honestly about symptoms. Family teams must be prepared to assess, monitor and report on symptoms with the team while supporting or advocating for adjustments accordingly through the process of Returning to Learn and then Returning to Play.
