Page - Brain Injury Resource Distribution Program
The Brain Injury Resource Distribution Program was initiated in 1998 with the Tote Bag Program, developing the concept in response to an extensive statewide needs assessment in which people with brain injuries and their families voiced that they often lacked, or failed to retain, information from a medical setting upon discharge from care. They described the experience as a feeling of “walking off a plank” into a sea of unknowns and confusion around changes and disability following brain injury. Since that time, feedback has informed a transition to a customized resource folder so that we could easily put in their hands an array of basic information about common physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and family changes that may occur after brain injury and allow for additional resources to be requested based on need. The folders contain introductory materials and are distributed at emergency rooms, intensive care units, other medical settings, and Iowa Brain Injury Resource Network sites across the state, to individuals who have experienced a brain injury and their families.
