The human services system tends to be divided into “silos” or distinct and separate categories for service based on a main or primary diagnosis. However, one person may belong in any number of categories—and a narrow view of an individual can downgrade the ability to understand them as a whole person, thereby diminishing the quality and comprehensiveness of service that a person can receive. It is our goal to break through those silos and increase providers’ capacity to serve individuals with co-occurring or multi-occurring disorders that include brain injury.
We can start by increasing knowledge of the impact of brain injury on the body, mind, emotions, and behavior as they interact with each other, understanding a person’s needs individually, and building support plans based on needs instead of diagnosis. BIAIA offers brain injury education and training related to individuals who also may have intellectual disabilities, mental health conditions, developmental disabilities, substance abuse disorders, physical disabilities, and history of incarceration. BIAIA strives to work within a framework using trauma-informed principles.
