Welcome to our volunteer page! By giving your time, skills, and passion, you can make a real impact. From registration to logistics and guest support, your time and effort help ensure a successful and seamless event. Annual Conference

Our annual conference will be on Thursday, March 12th and Friday, March 13th at the Sheraton in West Des Moines, with prep on-site on Wednesday, March 11th.

Some of the possible volunteer activities include:

  • Marketing (e.g., sharing our social media posts about the event on your social media accounts)
  • Event set-up on-site on Wednesday
  • Decorate exhibit hall on Wednesday
  • On-site support at registration desk Thursday and Friday
  • On-site tech support Thursday and Friday
  • Event tear-down on Friday

Registration + breakfast and lunch would be included on the day(s) of the conference (Thursday and Friday) on which you volunteer.

Advocacy Day

Bain Injury Advocacy Day on February 24, 2026 at the State Capitol, Des MoinesOur annual Brain Injury on the Hill Day will be on Tuesday, February 24th at the Capitol in Des Moines.  

Some of the possible volunteer activities include:

  • Marketing (e.g., sharing our social media posts about the event on your social media accounts)
  • Event set-up on-site
  • On-site support at registration table
  • Supporting individuals in talking to legislators
  • Talking to legislators that don’t have a visitor
  • Event tear-down
  • Public policy engagement (e.g., local, state, federal engagement opportunities

Public Policy Engagement

Volunteers in this role will help elevate the voices of Iowans impacted by brain injury through policy education, advocacy, and civic engagement activities. This type of volunteer engagement is ongoing and available at any time. Tasks may include:

Direct Outreach

  • Call, email, write or visit in person with local, state, and federal elected officials about issues affecting individuals with brain injury.

 

Civic Engagement

  • Attend meetings, town halls, or legislative forums to ask questions and raise awareness about issues specific to brain injury.
  • Join public hearings or legislative subcommittees when brain injury–related topics are on the agenda.
  • Submit public comments during open feedback periods on proposed policy or rule changes.

 

Advocacy Campaign Support

  • Share your personal story (or help others share theirs) in written or video form for advocacy efforts.
  • Help distribute calls to action during legislative sessions to your networks.
  • Share educational and advocacy content on social media or by email.
  • Participate in public feedback sessions or surveys on Medicaid services, transportation, housing, or other systems of care.

Focus Groups

Focus group volunteers help us improve the clarity, tone, and impact of the work we do. Whether you’re a brain injury survivor, caregiver, professional, or community ally your input helps us grow. This type of volunteer engagement is ongoing and available at any time.

Website Feedback Focus Group

Goal: Review designated areas and resources on our website through the lens of a survivor, caregiver, or professional.

Activity:

  • Navigate designated sections of the BIAIA website
  • Provide feedback on what’s helpful, confusing, or missing
  • Suggest improvements for accessibility, layout, and navigation

Format: Small group Zoom session or individual feedback

Resource Review

Goal: Help us review printed and digital materials.

Activity:

  • Review specific brochures, flyers, handouts or guides
  • Share suggestions about language, format, and usefulness
